I was diagnosed with a rare skin disorder in 2009 - I saw doctors, dermatologists, natural paths/naturopaths, holistic practitioners, homeopaths, pharmacists... and I want to share what I find out along my journey.
I have been seeing some people talk about how they hate that their new mask wearing routine is making their DWD freak out! I have been having a good reaction to Kiehls Ultra Face Cream and SoonJung creams (as mentioned in a previous blog). It feels nice, no burn, and has really helped create a barrier to the friction of the mask.

I asked my dermatologist what a raw, red, crusted (sounds like DWD!) but with white heads was all about and she confirmed my suspicion: that's not a break out that's acne. GREAT.
Helps remove scars, suitable for all skin types, assists in removing makeup, delays aging of skin, and removes extra oil from skin, excellent for razor bumps and in-grown hairs. Rich in Vitamins A, E & Iron, Revered for having skin nourishing benefits due to an abundance of antioxidants.
How to use it
You can use the Black Soap for showering, bathing, washing your hands, hair and face. Take the Black Soap apart and knead it into a ball to make sure there aren’t any jagged edges, and rub between hands to work into lather.
Key Ingredients & Benefits
100% Unrefined Raw Shea Butter: Shea Butter can be used to treat all of the following skin conditions: Dry Skin, Eczema, Infant Eczema, Stretch Mark Prevention & Minimization, Psoriasis, Arthritis & Rheumatism, Wrinkle Prevention, Diaper Rash, Muscle Fatigue, Scar Minimization & Skin Discolorations, Dry Hair & Scalp and as a natural shaving agent. Shea Butter has been used for centuries for its amazing abilities to renew, repair, and protect the skin. Shea Butter helps to alleviate eczema, soothes sunburn, minimizes stretch marks, long lasting moisturizer, rich in vitamin E, A, and F.
Roasted Plantain Skin: Helps to remove foreign objects and particles from the body. Relieves sunburn, Helps to heal from insect bite, Aids in quicker healing of wounds, Lowers chance of scarring, Treats acne and Rosacea.
Coconut Oil: Vitamin E, Assist In Anti-Aging, Rich In Protein, Tissue Repair, Excellent Moisturize For Dry And Hard Skin, Excellent Exfoliant.
Palm Oil: Contains vitamin E, Great anti aging product, Helps skin fight free radicals that damage skin, Deep cleansing, Helps in prevention of skin inflammation.
It definitely helped my raw irritated facial skin; it dried it out without making it sore and itchy. I found that doing it before bed with the Vitamin A cream worked best (in the morning I used my sensitive astringent and a moisturizer **it could be that it's winter here or just the fact that I'm using soap for the first time in ever on my face like this but my skin is thirsty for a good moisturizer. So far I'm making do with the leftovers from Korea but I will need a replacement soon! Something heavy but not oily or perfumed.... I also still did my used coffee grounds as a scrub 2x this week, and avoided the chin area/went over it lightly as it hurt so much.
No makeup in my pictures, and they were taken after washing my face with the soap. The lights are so bright that you don't really get to see how red and raw it was.
I am going to keep this for a while and I think once my Aveeno sensitive skin wash runs out I may switch to this as an all around body wash too (though I will have to secure a good body lotion as it is drying) any suggestions on what you use for body lotion and facial moisturizer is welcome! Leave me a comment to tell me what works for you!

SO I recently went on a trip to South Korea and I experienced their OBSESSION with skin care. For those that live in Ontario you will understand when I say: take all the Starbucks and Tim Hortons and change those into makeup and beauty stores = that's Seoul, South Korea. They were EVERYWHERE. My travel partner and I pretty much went into every one of them (she was fascinated with their products and became a little obsessive herself!)
Now people around me know I have a skin disorder so she knew I wouldn't have as much fun playing potions class in every Etude House we came across. But I was willing to try things that were for sensitive skin... and a face mask or two because they just looked lovely! I tried a tea tree oil mask and I have to say it was GREAT! Take a look:
It was super hydrating and cooling and I never had a breakout or irritated skin after. I liked them so much I got a second pack of them to take home. Roberta, my travel buddy and makeup Yoda, recommends doing them every week (or every other week if that sounds too much to someone like me!)
I have also been trying their SoonJung line and so far after a week no bad reactions and no irritation.
I also picked up one of these (well not this exact one, I bought mine for about $3 in a Daiso in Seoul...)
And it's a great way to not use pad products/something reusable and better for the environment PLUS it just uses warm water to take off your makeup. For me, less is better with my skin, so to just use water or a tiny bit of light soap like Neutrogena Naturals is great. I highly recommend adding this to your arsenal!
I will repost on more of the products I'm using from Korea, but so far I like how light and non-irritating they are. The makeup all include SPF too which is a necessity with me being a ginger (and the DWD). The ones I am looking forward to are: Baking Powder cleanser, more sheet masks, and this Face Blur.
Having DWD means I deal with a lot more redness and spot treatment than most, and sometimes all the products can be overwhelming so I often just... don't do anything. But it's fun to play with makeup again and build confidence around looking "pretty". It's not an everyday thing for me but having healthy skin should be - I am looking forward to learning how to clean and hydrate my skin in a helpful way as I age with DWD.
UPDATE JAN 23 2020 - I have been back for almost two weeks and I LOVE that face pad, it has become a daily ritual and so great. The SoonJung line has been nice but not exactly an improvement, but still nicely hydrating and not irritating me. The Baking Powder foam cleanser stung the first time I tried it so I steered clear of it since. The sheet masks are still my #1 favourite from this trip!

I have some sad news, my experiment did not go well with my last post about the Saje Restoral Skin Ointment it didn't work for me, I tried it for a week, applying in the morning and at night. Here is the day by day:
Day 1
Day 2
Day 3
Day 4
Day 5
...and then I stopped. My skin was getting sore and irritated and hurt. So I stopped and called this a failed experiment. I couldn't make it to day six :(
I went right back to Vitamin A Cream and BOOM it was better in a few days with my pink dots rather than blistered sores like you see above.
I'm sad that it didn't help; at first it felt like it was drying out the affected area but it was really just irritating it and making them open up and be sore and weepy, which made me sore and weepy.
You never know, it may work for you but for me it just seemed to make it worse.
What creams and dietary goods are you trying? Anything new?

I'm a bit hooked on Saje what with their amazing smelly stuff - but being so prone to flare ups and finding the more natural I go the more my skin seems to be happy with me... I started trying things other than their lavender pillow mist (which I HIGHLY recommend...) but their skin stuff.
Restoral Healing Skin Ointment's first ingredient is PINE TAR! See a theme here? My Pine Bark Extract pills are something I can't live without - and here I find this pine tar ointment?! I have to try it.
It is like a potted lip balm in texture, it's brown and it leaves a bit of an orangey brown colour on my skin when applied. BUT it is soothing and it doesn't make my DWD itch or flare. I have been using it for about a week now and my neck bumps (for lack of technical term for the bumps that are ALWAYS around) are not chapped or red, they are pink and soft. This bodes well...
I will keep trying it out and add it to the routine - though I am still applying Vit A cream at night this is something I have started to put on when I get home from work or in the morning under my make up. (Yes I sometimes use Cover FX on my neck to cover up the redness...)
I will report back after some time but I do think it might be worth a try for those who want an alternative to anti-itch creams and ointments. I used this on mosquito bites too and it helped as well!

Sometimes I just want to cry. Lately my skin has been so bad that it has spread on the chest and upper back to red angry spots that burn consistently, it's like a sunburn: it itches and aches all at the same time.
These photos do nothing for how red it is and how much it's taking over my upper body. Most of them are sores rather than the hard chapped version, and very big rather than the small pink dots I'm used to.
Thankfully it is still off my face (phew) but I'm beginning to worry that it's getting worse.
More of an archive for how my DWD is behaving - I don't really know what to do. I think it may have something to do with the fact I did a gym class and the poor ventilation in the room made me sweat buckets which always triggers my skin into angry mode - and I have been stressed out about an upcoming project. But really? This is the way it is now? I have to wear my stress on my skin so openly and painfully??! Not. Cool.
I also blame the fact that I can't find a Vitamin A cream that has nothing else in it, my go-to Life Brand is getting harder and harder to find. The Jamiesons one has sugar in it and smelly crap that irritate my skin. Do you have something that is working for you?
I will up my water intake and go back to meditations and double my pine bark and Vitamin B but... I don't want to go on an elimination diet again and I don't want to stop drinking alcohol completely again. Ugh. Just ugh. And sadness.

I have a tough post to make here.
I recently got an email (thanks for those by they way! Always happy to connect!) that ended with "I just want to feel normal."
I can't help you with that.
What I can do is help you learn from my mistakes and triumphs - but ultimately only you can find your "normal" and I put those in lil quotes because I also don't believe in normal. That word is loaded with baggage so I urge you to find what makes you YOU and you happy.
Under the recommendations that the above parties give you I also recommend cutting out triggers and allergens like:
-alcohol
-high sugar intake
-cow dairy
-whatever makes your skin (and stomach) crawl when you eat it
I also recommend using gentle and natural products like:
-Perfume free moisturizer (I love the Aveeno line or their knock offs + I live off of Life Brand Vitamin A cream.)
-Perfume free laundry detergent
-Moisture rich shampoo (I'm really liking Rosemary Mint by Aveda) as less crap in your hair = less itchy/scaly skin on my head and neck.
-ditch as much makeup as possible as it only irritates the skin, but if you have to I have been having a good time with Cover FX for hiding bumps and redness.
I also recommend asking about vitamins. I take a women's multivitamin + Pine Bark Extract + B complex + D, and sometimes Zinc + Omegas + Probiotics.
It's a bit overwhelming and I can't say that I have been 100% following my own rules/reco's - but when I do I feel better and have fewer flare ups.
This is not to say I don't have any trace of my Darier's.
I ALWAYS have bumps. I ALWAYS have redness.
It's just manageable with the above regime.
See?
Stress.
Lady Time.
Parties with all the sugary treats and alcohol.
Sweating really hard at the gym.
All that and more makes for visible/more bumps. That's just life. For me anyway.
So I'm really terribly sorry, my blog isn't doctor approved, nor is it the recipe you have been looking for to make this go away (but if you have it please share with the rest of us!)
I'm just letting you in on my side of the fight against Darier's - and I hope you take something positive away from it. I hope you share your struggles and wins with me so we can learn from each other.
But other than that?
It just goes on. I wear a lot of scarves. I have a lot of cover ups for the beach. I try to avoid certain foods if I know I'm going to have my picture taken or whatever - and I have had a shift in career to get behind the camera rather than in front of it. It's my way of dealing. But that's just it - my way.
Please share your way of dealing and maybe it will help others too. That's all I'm doing here :)
Thanks for your emails and comments.
I hope we can help each other out.

I was recently contacted by Discovery Channel and Betty to see if anyone in our community would like to share their story:
The message I received from Jessica:
The documentary we are making will follow single men and women who feel that their love lives have been affected by a medical or physical condition and as a result may not feel entirely comfortable with being open about their condition when they first meet people. We would like bring a bit of awareness to skin conditions, such as psoriasis, keloid scarring, vitiligo and eczema. I understand that a lot of these conditions are hard to deal with because there is no simple cure and individuals may have to live with a condition for their entire life. I wondered if anyone from the UK ever got in touch with you about Darier’s disease? Darier’s disease isn’t something we have previously featured, and it would be great to provide some awareness to a new condition.
I'm intrigued, aren't you? I think sharing our stories is necessary to end stigma and create community! I hope you message her :)

I just wanted to say thanks: thank you for visiting this site and thanks for sending me your notes, comments and emails about your insights/triumphs/questions/answers/journeys. Thank you for telling your story.
I have a separate blog at my mental health website and I invite guest bloggers there to share their stories - I want to encourage community. And I think I want that here too. So many times I hear such great feedback or even a personal story of how you are dealing with Darier's that I automatically want to ask if I can report it as a blog here. Well, why not?!
If you are willing to share your journey please let me know and I will happily post it here to share to others.
I have readers from around the world and it would be great to hear how others are doing.
I would love to know if you are using Pine Bark or if you have found something else that is working for you. If you have had great vs. poor results when following any kind of diet or prescription.
Not many are talking about Darier's White Disorder so we might as well start up our own discussion and fight this together.

A new kind of flare up has been happening the past month:
The little red dot I'm used to. But the blotchy pancake thing - what the WHAT?!
I have taken this to mean that I am not eating right (I have been stress eating and just this past weekend was Thanksgiving in Canada so there was much imbibing and silly foods that made it into my stomach... I regret most all dairy items...!)
Plus I have been majorly stressed out with going back to school, online classes, work, filming, auditioning, getting a puppy and - hey, that's life! So how am I supposed to live my life and not be stressed?
I think I have to start a plan on curbing my stress, because even though I adore to be busy I shouldn't be stressing out my system. I bought some stand alone Zinc to take
Advice? Have you seen these types of flare ups before?

Having a flare up this month - I think it's because (sorry gentlemen but) I'm starting new birth control pills and my hormones are everywhere. Plus I'm stressing about work, and not watching my sugar intake. Or it could just be that I'm getting older and my skin is not as resilient as it used to be.
I went to see my useless dermatologist who asked ME what was working. Huh.
The only thing he said that was useful was about Vitamin A - I forgot it is one of the top vitamins in skin rejuvenation. So I passed on the hundred dollar cream and went and got that cream you see above at the health food store for 9.99$ So far so good. The only thing is, it has "fragrance" - which could mean an irritant. But so far that hasn't been a bother to my skin. It actually smells nice! But it is very light - made for wrinkles apparently - so it absorbs fast and I usually like heavier creams like the Lifebrand vitamin E cream.

Well if you have never heard of the word Candida -then nuts to you! No, I'm joking - its just that it may be my second least favourite word ever. It has to do with digestive health and the over growth of bad intestinal flora. Basically sugar becomes the evil overlord of your digestive tract and makes your life terrible.
Everything from itchy eyes, fuzzy brain function, sore throat, yeast infections, smelly feet and breath... the list goes on and on how Candida can harm you. In fact it can cause break outs on your skin and in your mouth! which is why I thought it would be interesting for you all to read.
This lead me to find this: http://www.westonaprice.org/soy-alert/266-myths-and-truths-about-soy.html as I cannot live without sushi and soy products I am so sad that it is on the DO NOT EAT list. I think I will have to do it in moderation as I cannot give it up. I can easily say goodbye to pastries but not unagi maki ;)
I have been complaining about a sore throat with no cough. Itchy eyes. Face and thighs breaking out with DD. Bloating and yes - the female bits have gone wayward too. I recently went on a trip to Vienna where all I did was eat pastries and coffee - gee. I wonder why my gut is all out of whack? I am in such pain. And every time I eat I feel like I just ate a turkey dinner.
This is making my Darier's freak out! I am having more and more outbreaks since eating all that sugar. I knew sugar was a trigger and thought with digestive enzymes and only doing it for a short time my body would allow for it. I was SO WRONG.
Things I knew already and are having to learn a second time:
milk products are bad
sugar is even worse
alcohol dehydrates past your fun night out
-basically I can't have nice things.
What am I going to do about it? Well... I may have to go see my doctor for the female bits part as I don't think I can take it much more! But a detox will have to happen and I am SO TICKED OFF about that as all I want to do is eat sushi. I am wondering if there is a way around this eliminate sushi part...
Things I SHOULD EAT
Lentils- Lentils are so versatile and tasty. When combined with long grain brown rice they become a complete protein and lentils can be used in so many different recipes.
Quinoa- This grain is a complete protein and can be used in place of rice and pasta.
Avocado- This fruit is a powerhouse of nutrition and rich in healthy fat.
Chia seeds- These little dynamos can also be added to many dishes to up their nutritional value.
Coconut Oil- This healthy fat can be used in place of other oils in recipes and has amazing anti-fungal properties.
Turmeric- This spice is a must on the Candida diet and is perfect with lentils. Don’t be afraid to cook with it in all kinds of recipes.
Brown Long Grain Rice
Garlic- The health properties of fresh garlic are many.
Fresh Lemons- They are rich in vitamin C, very low in sugar, and have an alkalizing effect on the body. Lemons make a great marinade and salad dressing option.
